Ma’yan

From our Portfolio
Ma'yan

Ma’yan is a program of JCC Manhattan, working toward greater equality for women and all people, in the Jewish community and the wider world. Based in New York City, they provide feminist, social justice, and leadership training to self-identified teen girls and teach vital skills to parents and educators.

In Fall 2016, Social Ink helped Ma’yan with the CMS conversion of its main website, moving the site from its Drupal model and rebuilding it on the open-source WordPress platform. We created a flexible user-interface to help various users of the site easily access Ma’yan’s many resources. Maintaining the organization’s youthful visual identity, we made light design changes to reflect new thinking in the web world. The Ma’yan site is mobile-responsive and works across various devices based on pixel depth and screen size.

We’re proud to have teamed up with such a great organization that provides progressive, feminist training to young women. Our work with Ma’yan is a testament to Social Ink’s work on websites for nonprofits and advocacy groups.

Scholars at Risk at NYU

Scholars at Risk Homepage

Scholars at Risk offers safety by arranging temporary academic positions at member universities and colleges to scholars facing grave threats, so scholars’ ideas are not lost and they can keep working until conditions improve and return to their home countries.

In spring 2016, Social Ink worked with Scholars at Risk to completely overhaul the network’s home on the web. We partnered with administrators from SAR to create a web platform that allowed international branches of the organization to upload their specific content and integrate Salsa forms for donations and scholar submissions. The site is responsive across several tablets, monitors, and phones.

Social Ink is glad to have made this site with Scholars at Risk. It represents our work at the nexus between advocacy and academia.

Continuing our mission in working with organizations that engage human rights – including gender-equality and access to healthcare – across the world, Social Ink recently partnered with the Catholic Medical Mission Board, an NYC-based nonprofit that supplies funds and organizes around the world.

Together with key staff we helped design a site from scratch, emphasizing eye-catching statistics, mission-based work and engaging donors across multiple campaigns.  Integration with third party software – such as MailChimp – rounded out the project.

Development and design conversion for Antonioni’s restaurant in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Continuing our work building websites for restaurants and other food-oriented small businesses, we worked alongside an independent graphic design firm to convert their mockups to reality, a dynamic, image and content driven website offering fresh menus and other info about the restaurant and the bustling Lower East Side neighborhood.

By providing a custom WordPress build and backend, the small business owners can easily update menus and other information pages to keep their hungry public up to date with the latest in seasonal and fresh offerings.

The Good Fork

The Good Fork restaurant in Red Hook, Brooklyn is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. You can imagine how thrilled we were when we were given the opportunity to implement the designs and develop their new website. If you’ve never been, find a way to go! As the new website says, it “feels like being inside a boat or the diner car of an old train. It boasts an eclectic, globe trotting menu that has one foot in comfort food and the other in fine dining.”

Our work on the website involved building a customized CMS that provides a public calling card for the restaurant, aligning its aesthetic with the ambiance of the physical space, while fitting the needs of the owners, converting the designs to a smooth, fast-loading site. Specific features of the site include a high resolution slide show, easy to update menus for dinner, brunch, dessert, and the bar, several informational pages, and easy to update press reviews and clippings.

As part of our larger mission to provide beautiful websites for small businesses, we’re particularly thrilled to be working to design websites for restaurants, making a better web for the hardworking and creative endeavors of the new Brooklyn food movement.

As part of our work building dynamic, CMS-powered websites for artists & creatives, we built out a lush portfolio site for model and artist May Andersen.

The site includes photography from her modelling portfolio, her own photography and artwork, as well as essays and a blog. In addition to the standard CMS backend for content updates and edits, we spliced in photos from Andersen’s instagram feed, leveraging the ease and inclusiveness of this popular social network.

To complete the aesthetic, we are using custom pro fonts from the typekit service and full bleed browser width photos to provide a unique presence and immersive experience.

In order to realize this vision, Columbia and the BCFR  partners approached Social Ink to brand, design and develop an information-based site, with an extendable codebase for future interaction and resource-building. By incorporating a customized CMS backend for easy staff control, a high resolution slideshow, partner buttons, and content templates, the site provides access for participants and researchers, highlighting grants and publications in addition to background information and contact forms.

The BCFR is funded by the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, and the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
