We’ve been hard at work for the last several months on a big rebuild, working with the dedicated and hard-working Communications department at Working Families to transition their old, outdated website to a new platform as the organization shifts their aim from a local, New York-based entity to a growing national presence.

Working Families is growing, fast. With a plan to be active in all 50 states, their current outreach has far outpaced their old, “blog style”. We worked to analyze their information architecture, and build a system that could easily grow as they did — without the need for technical implementation at every turn.

Smells like a new website! Freshkills Park Alliance relaunches with a robust new web presence.

“Freshkills.” Was there ever a better name for a landfill? An infamous location in New York City lore, the former “dump” is now being transformed into a sparkling 2200 acre urban park, with an ambitious plan for mixed use applications across the spectrum of public participation.

It’s been our great honor here at Social Ink to have spent the last year working closely with the Freshkills Park Alliance (the non-profit which partners with the City of New York to redevelop the site) to re-plan, organize, and rebuild the FKPA website, from design through to development. Carrying forward our founding mission to serve nonprofits, public and civic-minded organizations, we can’t wait to see the Park unfold as the plan comes to life.

Help us sing the praises of the new Highbridge Voices website

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the new website for Highbridge Voices, an arts- and youth-centric nonprofit using music education and performance to enrich the lives of local children in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, NY.

We specialize in working with nonprofits to help them grow, based around our model of collaborative work and building sites that can be independently managed down the road.

Standing strong in the currents of the US Criminal Justice System

Recently we launched our third website dealing with the complicated nodes of the criminal justice world in the United States.  As part of our larger work with nonprofit websites, this project was another initiative of the Vera Institute of Justice: The Status Offense Reform Center (SORC).

SORC is a resource center for lawmakers, policymakers and activists interested in reforming these systems, concerned primarily with juvenile justice and the criminalizing semantics of institutional and systemic intervention. The project adds to our work with The Correctional Association and Raise the Age – NY, in addition to Vera’s JH Connect project, to provide a cohesive groundwork for reform movements in the NYC area and beyond.

This major initiative was as challenging as it is vital, as we helped to integrate a library hundreds of resources and  publications into an accessible interface and built a toolkit for reform with a narrative approach.  With the SORC launch, we continue to work toward our mission of providing web design for nonprofits working across the social justice spectrum.

The Dilettante Army marches on

We launched one of the most fun projects of the year recently, the brand-spanking-new Dilettante Army website.

Dilettante Army is an art and culture-based online magazine, publishing “facts, lies and rants” about everything from Abromovic to the World’s Fair, and in between.

As our portfolio entry describes, highlights of our work together were a contructivist-inspired design and interface, and a new, image-based search results algorithm with both relevance and randomization. Fun stuff for both our designer and developer nerds!

A new brand with an old world feel: Nolita Chemists

logoWe’re very proud to announce the recent launch of Nolita Chemists, whose new website kicks off a fresh new visual identity and brand. Social Ink worked with Nolita Chemists on both branding and web design and development, creating a logomark and set of branding guidelines to welcome them to the neighborhood.

As a small, local drugstore in the Nolita district of lower Manhattan, Nolita Chemists wanted to appeal to both a sense of history as well as a modern sense of specialty goods and personalized service. For more on our work on this branding and web kickoff, see our portfolio entry.

Wishing Nolita Chemists success as they build roots and community ties!

The J.M. Kaplan Fund has a brand new website

We are proud to announce the recent launch of the new J.M. Kaplan Fund website, recently launched in August. The site provides a brand new platform for the fund, as they continue their philanthropic work in New York City, and on international projects such as historic preservation in Turkey and environmental work in the northern seas.

Our work included a transition to a Content Management System (CMS) based site for staff content control, and special areas for program overviews and grant inquiries.
