Donald Katz

Donald Katz: Homepage - Websites for Creatives by Social Ink

Donald Katz is a journalist, author, and founder of Audible.com. His 1992 book, Home Fires, has been reissued this year.

We worked alongside Donald’s staff and media team to create a personal brand, identity and website. The site provides a writerly presence on the web, and a place to showcase the many facets of his work: as author & journalist, Audible.com founder, and promoter of the city of Newark, New Jersey, where Audible’s headquarters were moved in 2007.

Specialty work on the project included a two-pronged navigation system, embedded social media and video, and a flexible production environment responsive to the timelines involved with a major book release.

As part of our work designing and developing websites for creatives, including writers and new media professionals, it’s been great working with Donald and team. We encourage you to visit Don’s new site and explore his rich body of work. From essays and articles, to Home Fires and other books, to work with Audible — in Newark, and beyond!

Freshkills Park Alliance

Freshkills Park Alliance: Homepage

Continuing our work building websites for civic groups and public-sector organizations such as the New York City Parks, we worked closely with the Freshkills Park Alliance to design, develop and implement and foundational website for public outreach, information, and resources.

The website gives Freshkills Park an extended reach as this massive urban landscape redevelopment project proceeds in the former Freshkills Landfill in Staten Island.

Project challenges included on-site, recurring donations, events integration with Eventbrite, visual identity alignment, and considerable information architecture consulting to make sense of the breadth of resources and information that the Alliance offers. The site is fully mobile responsive, adapting to touch devices and lower resolution screens without loading a separate site.

The Freshkills Park Alliance, along with the New York City Parks Department, is powering an amazing, and vital public works project; we can’t wait to see the plan unfold in the coming years.

Highbridge Voices

Highbridge Voices - Homepage

Highbridge Voices is an arts-centric nonprofit in the Highbridge area of the Bronx, NY, focusing on youth development through music education and performance.

Continuing our work building websites for nonprofits, we worked alongside the Highbridge team to completely overhaul their old, static website, bringing them into the ‘modern’ age of the web. By re-organizing their content, focusing on audience, access, and prioritization, we re-shaped their presence and outreach, providing a CMS-powered site that will grow with the organization–and can be managed day-to-day by organizational staff.

Specific project challenges included a vast multimedia collection, including audio players, video, and slideshow galleries, and integrated, self-hosted donations for fundraising, including recurring donations. We extend Highbridge outreach by integrating the site with the Mailchimp CRM and E-Newsletter platform, setting up seamless collection forms to keep their audience engaged beyond the site itself.

We’re thrilled to work with this vital youth-oriented nonprofit and community organization, and count them as a shining example of the kind of clients we had in mind when we founded Social Ink.

The Good Fork

homepage | the good fork brooklyn | websites for restaurants by social ink

The Good Fork restaurant in Red Hook, Brooklyn is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. You can imagine how thrilled we were when we were given the opportunity to implement the designs and develop their new website. If you’ve never been, find a way to go! As the new website says, it “feels like being inside a boat or the diner car of an old train. It boasts an eclectic, globe trotting menu that has one foot in comfort food and the other in fine dining.”

Our work on the website involved building a customized CMS that provides a public calling card for the restaurant, aligning its aesthetic with the ambiance of the physical space, while fitting the needs of the owners, converting the designs to a smooth, fast-loading site. Specific features of the site include a high resolution slide show, easy to update menus for dinner, brunch, dessert, and the bar, several informational pages, and easy to update press reviews and clippings.

As part of our larger mission to provide beautiful websites for small businesses, we’re particularly thrilled to be working to design websites for restaurants, making a better web for the hardworking and creative endeavors of the new Brooklyn food movement.

Vera Center's Status Offense Reform Center Homepage - by Social Ink

The Vera Institute’s new Status Offense Reform Center joins experts with lawmakers in proposing alternatives to the criminal justice system, especially around juvenile justice sentencing.

With team members at Vera’s SORC initiative, we workshopped around accessibility, audience, and user interface and experience (UI UX), building a site from the ground up, with a ‘soup to nuts’ scope ranging from visual identity to web-side information architecture and database design.  A key move for SORC was the inclusion of publications both on and offsite, a dynamic, meta-data driven filtering system, and a dynamic “how-to” toolkit for interested stakeholders.

The SORC team is doing great advocacy and educational work toward reform in New York City and throughout America; as part of our continued work with web design for nonprofits (and other organizations), Social Ink is proud to outfit them with the right tools for the job.

The Cost-Benefit Knowledge Bank for Criminal Justice (CBKB) works to expand understanding and use of cost-benefit analysis in criminal justice. CBKB is a project of New York’s Vera Institute of Justice.

As part of our continuing work with the Vera Institute of Justice, Social Ink worked closely with CBKB to rewrite the underlying codebase and platform for their website. In addition to fundamental programming rewrites, we reviewed the site for UI and UX (user interface and user experience) issues, trimming away and streamlining areas for a more accessible and less disorienting user experience.

We’re proud of our continuing work building websites for nonprofits with the Vera Institute of Justice, a New York-based organization working toward justice reform and advocacy across an array of sectors and disciplines.

American Turkish Society Gala: Fundraising Microsite for Annual Benefit - Homepage (top section)

The American Turkish Society has been working for 65 years to enhance business, economic, political, and cultural ties between Turkey and the United States.

To celebrate their 65th anniversary and continue their cross-cultural work, we worked with the foundation to present a distinct and flashy “fundraising microsite” to raise awareness, sell tickets, and give donors and supporters a way to spread the work about their annual Gala.

As a standalone site from the foundation’s core web presence, the site uses a long-scrolling, mobile-friendly “panel” approach, encapsulating all six sections within the homepage of the site. We built a custom system for ATS staff to easily manage donors at various levels of giving, and provide embedded video, purchasing and auction buttons, and various content section layouts. Large, high resolution background images for each section give the site a sense of complexity and vibrancy.
